The desired or suitable degree of thickening of the beverages or food is achieved by the amount of powder added. Depending on the initial consistency of the liquid or food, higher or lower dosing must be used. As the amount of powder increases, beverages are brought into one of the four IDDSI stages. IDDSI level 1 corresponds to the former “nectar-like”, level 2 to “syrup-like”, level 3 to “honey-like” and level 4 to “pudding-like”. The dosage also depends on the type of swallowing disorder and can be individually prescribed by a physician/logopedist.
